8 Days Later

Two weeks ago, Christians celebrated the bodily resurrection of Jesus the Christ; a pivotal act and proof of his claim to being the Messiah. Believing Jesus was a historical person is not hard - in fact virtually all historians accept that as fact. Believing that Jesus was crucified and buried is also widely accepted by scholars. Believing that he rose from the dead, well, that’s where belief stops for many. True, it appears to be a preposterous claim and one which deserves investigation. Even the disciple, Thomas, wouldn’t believe it without proof as we see in John 20:24-25 (ESV): Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” Fair to say Thomas was skeptical and even distrustful of his friends’ claims to the contrary.  Is that you? Are you skeptical of the resurrection claim? You’re not alone. If it’s true, how would that impact you? Ask yourself; if it’s true would I be happy, fearful, perplexed, angry, or indifferent? What would you do with that information?

I think Thomas wanted it to be true but he was a man who needed proof and Jesus knew that. In fact, the Bible records the gracious act of Jesus reappearing again 8 days later for, I believe, the express purpose of helping Thomas. John 20:26–29 records the following: Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

This passage points out the graciousness of God toward those who want to believe but struggle with the resurrection. I believe God is still in the business of helping the honest skeptic! If that’s you, know that I am praying that Jesus introduces himself to you and the truth of his resurrection! Here’s a helpful read on the topic:
