…Anticipatory Reflections of Sunday…

Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.”
~ Psalm 5:8

I can’t wait to hear Jeff’s message about an obscure, never-before-read text titled “David and Goliath” OK, OK, it’s not obscure or new, but it’s refreshingly saturated with pure, unadulterated* confidence in the strength of God in our battles. (*Remember this story comes before Bathsheba.) David’s story is applicable to our church.

We have a battle. It’s not against flesh and blood, it is unseen. Yet, it is very real. It is “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” For Village Church, it is the battle against disunity, confusion about love, our own selfish pride, and even our collective need to keep growing together in love and service. It’s a battle of missions, waged for hearts that are bound in slavery to sin.

We also have a Lion. Jesus Christ is fighting our battles. What our flesh could not do, He has done. He is our Savior. He has overcome the power of sin in us, and no temptation now controls us. We have self-control, free to say no. He fights for us, against our own sinful desires.

In Him, we also have a Lamb. Jesus Christ is in us convincing us of a love that gets wronged without retaliation, gets hurt without resentment and loses without regret. We are more tender–we are righteous and holy without being self-righteous and without flaunting false humility or arrogant attempts at phantom piety.

So, we sing Lion and the Lamb.  Because Jesus is the Name above all names, we sing Your Name and because the circumstances that looked bleak for David resulted in his victory, we sing Sovereign Over Us. Because that Name of Jesus is the very name of hope itself–David’s hope, our hope–We sing Hope Has a Name, and because we want to respond with action, with conviction and life, we sing of His greatness, strength, healing and all-around total supremacy in the song Our God.

I hope you come, able to hear of the conviction/comfort/call of God. I hope you pull off the headphones of self-consuming priorities. I hope you know just how immensely loved you are. I hope to see you and sing with you at Church, this Sunday.
